America's Funniest Video's...Not so Funny

America's Funniest Home Videos (now known as AFV) has been around for a long time, in fact, I believe they are in their 21st season! They have provided American's and others across the world with thte kind of humor that can only come from real life situations.  I enjoy AFV and laugh as hard as anyone else, but as a Chiropractor, I don't find the humor in what is happening in 95% of the videos that are broadcast.

The majority of the videos are of people doing stupid things on ATV's, Bikes, Trampolines, the list goes on!  People fall, run into walls, run into each other.  This all makes for a good laugh, but it is no laughing matter when it comes to the injuries that are sustained by many of those people, who are unfortunately mainly kids.  Do you think that a 5-year-old riding his bike into a mailbox is really that funny?  When you think about the fact that he essentially sustained a whiplash injury, it doesn't maky you laugh too much anymore does it?

The problem with all of these "incidences" is that they are injuring the spine and those injuries are likely healing in wrong.  No, there is not blood and no broken bones, but there is still an injury nonetheless.  Yes, "Kids are resilient", "All kids fall down", and "It will make him tougher."  How many of you have said or heard those excuses?  Maybe you heard your own parents say it when you were a kid.  If you did, or if you hae said similar statemtns about your own child when they fall (whether it was a big fall or not), I want you to ask yourself a couple of questions.  First, do you experience ongoing symptoms that would indicate your body is not working the way it should?  Do you experience problems with indigestion>  Do you have allergies that have gotten worse as you've gotten older?  Do you have pain/numbness/aching anywhere in your body?  Do you feel like you get sick more often and your illnesses last longer as you age?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, here are two more to poner.  Would you like to do something that would change the course of your health...so that you can live life to the fullest?  Would you like to prevent your children from dealing with a life of sickness, disease, and mediocrity?  For 115 years, chiropractors have been helping people by removing interference to the function of the nervous system (subluxations) that are caused by injuries to the spine.  Yes, chiropractic helps to reduce pain in your back, but that is not its purpose.  Yes, chiorpractic has helped people to better deal with Infertility, Irritable Bowel Disease, and Influenza (to name just a few), but chirorpactic is not treating those diseases/disorders.

If there is any purpose in me wirting this Blog post, it is to attempt to help people see that there are so many things we do in our everyday life that can damage our spine and nervous system.  Over time, that damage can and will lead to decreased function and decreased health in our bodies.  Just by making the choice to get yourself and your family checked for subluxations, you could be radically altering the course of your life and will be able to look forward to a life of health and vitality rather than sickness and disease.

If you are interested in what I have written and have questions you can email me at blackmanfamilychiro@gmail.com OR if you would like to schedule an appointment as a new patient, please call our office at 815-623-5460.  Thank you!

Correction is Key

After years of gentle prodding by my family dentist, my parents finally took me to the orthodontist during my freshman year in high school. For those of you who have kids who have needed orthodontic work, you know this is sometimes too late!  After my examination, the orthodontist told us that I had a "cross-bite."  Correction of the problem would require an apparatus that would rapidly expand the roof of my mouth to the point of breaking the cartilate of the upper palate!  She also added that she was glad my parents didn't wait much longer to bring me in...any later into my development and major reconstructive surgery would have been required.  This is why kids seem to be getting orthodontic work done at earlier ages than ever before--properly aligning the teeth as kids are growing is easier than after they are full grown and structures are more set.

This concept can easily be related to chiropractic and the spine.  I have many patients in their 20s, 30s, and older who had a trauma to their spine at a young age (during development).  Because that injury went uncorrected, their spine grew and developed with an abnormality, leaving them more susceptible to future injury and health problems.  Adjusting adults is an important thing, but it often takes alot longer with less than ideal results when compraed with the time it takes and results we see when we are able to adjust kids at an early age!  This is why I am so passionate about adjusting kids!  By correcting the problems in their spines now rather than 20 years down the road, just think of the positive impact it will have on their lives!

After I had the Rapid Expansion Apparatus "installed" it took about a month of daily expansions before it "broke" the roof of my mouth.  During that time I was involved in my high school's fall drama production.  Needless to say, having a hunk of metal in my mouth made it difficult to enunciate!  My drama instructor asked if I could have it temporarily removed for the play.  When we asked my orthodontist, she blatantly told me if she did that my mouth would essentially collapse!  Of course we didn't want to do that--the problem was not corrected yet.  Two years later, when I finally got my braces off, I still had to wear a retainer--the problem was not completely corrected yet.  Today my teeth are not perfectly straight--they shifted because I didn't do a good job of wearing my retainer once I got into college.  Unfortunately, I "quit" before the problem was completely corrected.

This again can also be related to chiropractic care...NO your back is not going to collapse if you start chiropractic care and then suddenly stop!  However, if the problem with your spine is not fully corrected, by stopping care too soon, your spine will likely go back to the way it had been prior to starting chiropractic care.  This is often why I see people in and out of my office--they want a quick fix for their pain, but because the problem (causing the pain) was not corrected, I will eventually see them back in for the same issue.  Just like the issue with my teeth didn't happen overnight, the problems with your spine and nervous system didn't either.  And just like it took 2+ years to correct the alignment of my teeth, it will likely take time to correct the problems with your spine.  No, I don't force anyone into lifetime chiropractic care.  Its your body and your health, so it's your decision.  What I do is educate every person I see about the facts of their health and their spinal issues so they are able to make an informed decision about what they want for their own health care needs.

Make sense?  If it does to you, call our office to set up an appointment for you and your family!

When is the Right Time?

Many people often wonder, "How do I know if I need to see a Chiropractor?" Others ask, "When is the right time?"  To answer this question, I am going to ask you a couple questions.  When was the first time you went to a Dentist?  How old were you?  Did you know the average age of new chiropractic patients is about 45?  In your mind that may sound reasonable, as most people come in with some sort of pain/symptom, but that is the equivalent of walking into a dentist's office for the first time at age 45.  If you look at it that way, it sounds a bit silly to think of a 45-year-old with a mouthful of rotten teeth (or no teeth at all) going to the dentist for the first time and expecting to leave with straight perly whites!  We all can agree that we want to keep our real teeth, but if it was absolutely necessary, we could get transplants or dentures.  The same is not the case with your spine, spinal cord, and nerves--you only get one set for life...so we need to take care of them!

As a chiropractor, I am very passionate about preventing the next generation from dealing with the health problems that my generation and those before me have endured.  Over the Christmas holiday I was able to adjust my grandmother.  She is in her seventies, and unfortunately, has severe degeneration in her neck that causes pain, restriction of motion and makes her a bit more difficult to adjust.  Some people may say "that is normal for her age."  I could not disagree more!  Yes, meany of her problems are due to YEARS of uncorrected subluxations (injuries) in her spine, but it is not just due to "old age."  That would be like saying that it is "normal" for an older person to have a mouth full of cavities that require root canals!  If all of the problems in our body were really just due to old age, then we truly would be perfectly healthy as kids and as you age everything in your body would "wear out" the same...everything on both sides of your body would not function properly and hurt eaually!  Speaking from experience, this is not the case.  Often a person will have one bad knee, one side of their neck bothers them more, they will have low back pain that radiates into one leg, and there are many people who have high blood pressure but not hight cholesterol (and vice versa).  It all just depends on our individual history and not our age!

So, when is the right time to see a chiropractor?  Any time really!  Birth is the first injury you will have to your spine, so right after a person is born is a good place to start.  Any time you experience something that may injure your spine and damage your nerve system, like a fall, a car accident, a hard hit in football, whether it is a major injury or you just "walk it off," these are all times to get checked by a chiropractor.  You may not even have any pain, but by getting checked and preventing that injury from healing in wrong, you are preventing worse pain and health problems down the road!

Are you a Bright Lightbulb?

So, the question is...Are you a bright lightbulb? I know, many of you may be thinking..."what is she talking about???" Well, in our office we believe that every person born on this earth was created to be healthy, functioning at maximum potential, like a bright lightbulb...100 watts of pure power!

Have you ever seen a newborn baby? I just love watching them. It is amazing how truly perfect they are! Have you ever questioned what makes a child go from perfect to having chronic ear infections, constant runny noses, or gastric reflux? What is it that causes the bright (healthy) lightbulb to become dim (unhealthy)?

As a chiropractor, my main focus is ensuring that the nervous system, which controls and coordinates the function of the entire body, is functioning at maximum potential. Unfortunately, injuries to the spine and stresses to the nervous system cause a decrease in function and a lack of health on every level. This is what causes bright lightbulbs to dim. The purpose of Chiropractic then is to return the nervous system and therefore the body to its full wattage! By getting adjusted our patients see their body functioning better and better with each adjustment!

This July, we have been celebrating kids month. As you can see in the picture I have posted we have pictures on the wall of some of the bright lightbulbs in our office. We have kids of all ages whose parents see the importance of regular chiropractic care for their health and well being.

So, my last questions of the day-- Do you want to be a bright lightbulb? What about your kids? Do you want them to be a shining example of true health? Come in and get your power turned up!
